The school had 291 candidates and
216 were able to qualify for direct
entry to the University. Not only in
academics, there has also been an
increase in population, and currently,
the school has 1580 girls from all over
the country. She has also been
working hard on improving the
number of the teaching sta where
with the support of stakeholders has
increased the number of teachers
from 37 to the current 51.The school
has been employing several BOM
teachers.
More infrastructural
improvements
Supportive BOM, PA and
Motivation to both teachers
and students
Beyond academics, Joan has worked
tirelessly to improve the school’s
infrastructure and facilities. From
new dormitories to a modern library,
every addition is a testament to her
commitment to providing the best
possible environment for learning.
With the support of stakeholders and
the tireless e orts of the Board of
Management, Moi Kapsowar Girls
High School is undergoing a transformation
that will shape its future
for generations to come.
With the increased population she
has had to work on infrastructure to
address congestion in the dormitories
and classes. The school is working on
the construction of more dormitories,
and new classes. Through the
support of stakeholders particularly
the BOM chairman and Partners, the
school has managed to drill water to
run its programs without straining.
They have also assisted the school in
constructing a modern library which
is ongoing. The school is now
planning to improve the lighting
system by using solar to help cut
costs. It has worked on the farm to
help supply vegetables and a dairy
unit for milk supply. According to
the Senior Principal, the school is
generally progressing well.
Her vision is to see the school live
as per the mission of the school.
She is focusing on ensuring that,
the school can compete with other
national schools favourably.
The administrator trusts in God
that she will achieve that, because
presently the school has a committed
team of teaching sta , cooperative
stakeholders, BOM, and
specifically the BOM chairman
who has been of great support, to
ensure that the school progresses,
to be a star in this region as a
national school. Being a team
player whose leadership is all but
cooperation, she began by taking
both the teaching and support sta
separately for a bonding session
and agreeing on how to take the
school to the next level together.
She also engaged the students
through several barazas and per
class to hear from them and noted
several shortfalls like lack of a
reading culture since they lacked
self-drive which she has managed
to address.

Students being on toes all
the times
“By the end of those barazas, we
agreed with the girls that they were
supposed to ensure that they focus
and become self-motivated to read.
We have tried to improve the
reading culture by ensuring that we
have, the movements by running
to save on time, the policy of
speaking the right language, where
we introduced a slogan called
Every minute counts, so that they
know that when they waste a minute,
in class, they waste a precious
resource and is already bearing
fruits,” she said.
The students also had a lot to share
including challenging the administration
to put up a proper gate that
meets the standards of a national
school which was indeed lacking and
also requested for a Scania bus and
by God’s grace have been achieved
and left them more motivated.
Discipline among the girls
The new baby in Kapsowar
Town, 16m Scania Bus
The Scania bus was worth Ksh 16M.
Through parents who agreed to
contribute Ksh 3000 per year, Ksh
10M from and fundraising and
support from the BOM Chairman,
CS Kipchumba Murkomen and their
friends’ the bus was bought. The
amount was even cleared ahead of
the fundraiser. We received and
dedicated the bus on the very fundraising
day. The girls were so excited.
She reports that while her BOM is
equally new, they are so cooperative
and led by an aggressive Chairman
who has been going out to look for
resources to improve the infrastructure.
He has also been keen on
motivating students, teaching and
support sta.
Her administration is also keen on
matters of discipline. The school has
a strong team of guidance and
counseling apart from groups of
guidance and counseling. She says
those girls who have been found to
have problems with discipline are
taken for counseling and also involve
parents, in extreme cases.
Assistance to the needy
students
Her administration also empowers
class teachers, who are considered
as parents, teachers and principals
of their respective classes. Under
guidance and counselling, there is
also a kitty to assist the needy
students and has enabled the girls
to live as one, and as a sister’s
keeper. “Every opening day we
encourage the girls when doing
their shopping, to consider their
needy sisters, which we collect, I
keep some, my deputy keeps
some, the class teacher keeps
some and some are kept at the
guidance and counseling desk to
support the needy girls,” she said.
Annual Charity run
The School also has an annual
charity run to aid needy students.
It is in the Athletics Calendar
dubbed the Kapsowar Marathon
Charity Run and this year it will
be on the 22nd of June and will be
the 4th edition of the Kapsowar
Marathon charity run and environmental
conservation. It aims at
conserving the environment,
looking at the terrain of the area
and issues of mudslides. There
was a year mudslide was experienced
at the school and that is
why it was started. Last year the
school had a very successful one
where the school was able to help
200 needy girls pay their fees.
So far the school has not had extreme
cases since it does group counseling.
It involves professionals and embraces
spirituality where every Sunday and
Thursday in the evening we have
fellowships. Muslims are allowed to go
to mosques. There are mentors and
parents where the girls have been
grouped with their parent-teacher. A
group of 20 students and a teacher
where they even form families. The
twenty students are drawn from all
the classes.
