“I want to see the
School become a star
in this region, thanks
to cooperative stakeholders
-Senior Principal”
In the heart of Elgeyo Marakwet
County, nestled amidst the rolling
hills and whispering winds, lies Moi
Kapsowar Girls High School, a
beacon of hope and education for its
community. At the helm of this
institution stands Senior Principal
Joan Too, a seasoned educator with
a passion for nurturing young minds
and shaping futures. As she sits
down with ACTT Media representative
Michael Olweny, she reflects
on her journey from teacher to
principal, and the transformative
path she envisions for her beloved
school. Joan Too’s journey began in
1994 when she graduated from
Egerton University with a degree in
Education Arts.
Her career took her to various
schools, each experience shaping
her into the dedicated educator she
is today. From Ndalat Gaa Girls
High School to Lelwak Boys and
finally to AIC Kosirai Girls, Joan
witnessed the power of education to
uplift and transform lives.
It was at AIC Kerotet Girls that she
truly found her calling as an administrator,
leading the school from its
humble beginnings to a thriving
institution with over 600 students.
Soaring to National School
Her next chapter brought her to
Kerotet Girls, an Extra-county
school where she spent eight
fulfilling years before fate led her to
Moi Kapsowar Girls High School.
Here, amidst the rugged beauty of
Marakwet, Joan found her true
home. Despite the challenges that
come with leading a National
School, she embraced the opportunity
with unwavering determination
and a clear vision for the future.
“It has been a journey, I have
enjoyed teaching, I have enjoyed
being an administrator, and particularly
moulding girls. Luckily I have
been to AIC schools, as an administrator,
and being in a Christian
organization, we are encouraged to
mould girls all round thus spiritually,
morally, and academically,” she
admits.
Madam Too has stayed at her
current station for only two years
and being a National School she
admits there were high expectations
that included improvements in
academic standards of the school.
Under Joan’s leadership, Moi
Kapsowar Girls High School has
flourished academically, with the
mean KCSE score steadily climbing
to new heights. The school’s performance
reflects the dedication of its
teachers and the resilience of its
students. But Joan’s ambitions
extend beyond mere numbers; she
dreams of seeing her school shine as
brightly as any other national
institution, a beacon of excellence in
the region.
“The mean was at 7.6. While I was
stabilizing there was a top with 7.2
and 7.1, but last year we came back
to 7.7 which was an improvement
and a record in this school where we
had 15 A minuses with 74% ending
at the University,” she said.
“We are at a mean of
7.7, we have a target by
the end of this year, and
we agreed with the
stakeholders that in the
next two years, we should
be at the top that is 8.5 and
above, so that we live as
our status of a national
school,” she said.
The improvement will see Moi
Kapsowar Girls High School status
depicts that of a National school,
school a shining star.
